The Birthday Blog

1 October, 2008 at 11:48 am (Weekend Update)

28.

That’s right, this year was my golden birthday – I turned 28 on the 28th of September, 2008. Because I’m a nerd and like little number tricks like this, it amused me. Yeah, yeah, I know.

So, what did I do to celebrate the 28th? Turns out, I did most of my celebrating on the 27th. Whoops.

First, Mom came into the city to take me to Avenue Q, which I’d never seen. It was great! I knew a few of the songs from it, so I wasn’t surprised by it – I don’t think everyone that goes to the show expects to hear songs about porn, or racism, or being gay. Or to see puppets have sex on stage, for that matter. This is not a child-friendly puppet show, to be sure.

This is a PG-Rated song from the show…

After seeing a tawdry musical with my mother, I went home to get ready for the nights festivities.

What did we do? Well, myself and 11 friends went to dinner at a place called Alta. Tapas-style, and it was fairly tasty. A pain in the ass trying to split a check between 12 people, but eh. After that, we went to a bar called Nation that has GirlNation (aka lesbian night) on Saturdays, and stayed out much later than old people should.

Just writing it down like that makes it seem like a pretty boring night. It was not! The thing is, nothing extraordinary happened – I just got to spend my birthday with a group of friends. But that was exactly what I wanted. Everyone seemingly had a good time, and my friends that didn’t know each other before that night got along – it was really great. And it must be said that my last couple of birthdays weren’t spectactular – we have the SF Birthday Debacle (where essentially everyone forgot it was my birthday, except), so 26 ended up being fun (Scissor Sisters twice in one weekend? Hell yes.) if not a little depressing. Last year, my first birthday in NYC, was much better – but 27 was still spent with people I knew before NY, from either OK or SF.

This year was the first year I spent my birthday with people I’ve met in NY, and it was great. It really reaffirmed that NYC is home and I have a pretty great life here. I can’t complain – well, not too much 🙂

And what of my actual birthday? I went to Hicksville, Long Island for Tex Mex food from a chain restaurant (On The Border) – you can take the girl out of Oklahoma, but you apparently can’t take the Oklahoma out of the girl.

And Monday I took off work, as did my friend Sandy. We wandered all over the city, ate Dim Sum in Chinatown (I hadn’t had Dim Sum in ages), watched a movie – and I finally bought an iPhone. The iPhone is definitely the best gift I’ve ever bought for myself! Oh, and I should note that the iPhone has an application for wordpress – which means I’ll now be able to blog from anywhere. Mwahahahaha.

So, that’s that. Another year’s birthday, come and gone. I had a blast, but I can’t say I am in any rush to do it again – 30 is coming along entirely too quickly.
